    DSE Applied Learning Practical Skills for DSE Success Applied Learning Course Taking a Chance on Dance Cohort 2025 – 27 Timetable Phase 1: September 2025 - May 2026 [Download] Phase 2: To be announced Phase 3: To be announced Taking a Chance on Dance is one of the Applied Learning (ApL) courses offered to senior secondary students as an elective subject within the senior secondary curriculum. This course focuses on the aesthetic aspect of dance by engaging students in ta holistic experience as people, dancers and makers of dance through the “Three Key Learning Processes: Performing, Creating and Appreciation”. It involves learning to perform and create dance, learning to appreciate and appraise dance, and using dance to support cognitive learning. The course also provides an all-around training to students, in developing their creativity and imagination, and on the other hand enhancing their interpersonal relations and self-confidence. This course is conducted in Chinese.     Introduction to Risk Assessment for Production Activities Introduction to Risk Assessment for Production activities (Performing Arts) Introduction to Risk Assessment for Production Activities (Performing Arts) Risk assessment is an on-going process that evaluates risks from hazards that may arise along the production process, it is an important component of overall health and safety risk management. This course introduces the idea of risk assessment in the context of performing art productions. Indicative contents: - Concept of health and safety risk management and its process - Definition of hazards and risks - Common hazards and risk - Risk matrix - Risk evaluation - Concept of Hierarchy of control - Risk assessment processes along the production process - Review of cases Date: 29 June 2024 (Sat) Time: 2 pm - 5 pm Venue: HKAPA Language: Cantonese with English Materials Fee: $350 Enrol Speakers Cheung Man-lai Cheung Man-lai is a Lecturer in Technical Direction. He specialises in stage technology, technical direction for productions, venue operations, and workplace health and safety. He holds a BFA in Theatre and Entertainment Arts from the HKAPA, a Prof. Dip. in Occupational Safety and Health from the SCE of HKBU, and an Executive Cert. in Applied Psychology from HKUSPACE. German is continually honing his craft by obtaining professional training at institutions such as the Association of British Theatre Technicians, Artek Formations, and Total Trainings. Collaborating with his colleagues, he translated the ICoPER, the International Code of Practice for Entertainment Rigging, into traditional Chinese to propagate and share best practices. German’s current focus is on automation, applying new technologies, sustainable practices, and cultivating a healthy and safe culture in theatre-making. He is currently a technical member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and a member of the Association of British Theatre Technicians.

    Professional Development Connecting Performing Arts with Career Advancement Teaching and Learning Series / Teaching and Learning Series: Introductory voice workshop Ever wondered how to unlock the full potential of your voice? This introductory voice workshop will provide you with a solid foundation in understanding voice mechanics and everything you need to know about using voice. It will also help you clear away common misconceptions about voice usage and how to maintain healthy vocal use. It will also cover the application of vocal techniques in various musical theatre singing styles, extending beyond the realms of opera and choir voices. Date: 8 June 2024 (Saturday) Time: 10:00am – 1:30pm Venue: The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Language: Cantonese with English materials Certificate: The participants will be awarded a Certificate of Completion Fee: HK$650 Enrol Speaker LI Wing Hong, FRSA Senior lecturer in Voice Studies, Discipline leader of the Musical Theatre Curriculum School of Drama, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Mr. Li is an Estill Master Trainer and a highly regarded private singing coach, known for his work with popular singers including Louis Cheung, Kay Tse, Keung To, and Lyman Hueng. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and the first Chinese person in Britain to be awarded The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) bursary. After graduating from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a major in Acting, he further pursued his studies at the Birmingham School of Acting (BSA) and graduated in 2010 with an MA in Professional Voice Practice, earning distinction. He distinguished himself as the Drama Scholar of the English Speaking Union and participated in the Voice Teacher's Course at the Royal National Theatre studio, collaborating with internationally renowned voice practitioners like Patsy Rodenburg, Jeannette Nelson, and Kelly McEvenue. Launching his career in London, he excelled as a TV and film actor, theatre practitioner, and community arts worker. His notable TV credits include Casualty, Judge John Deed (BBC), Ultimate Force, and The Bill (ITV), while his theatre credits encompass performances such as Moonwalking in Chinatown at the Soho Theatre in 2007 and Sweet Mandarin with True Heart Theatre in 2009. Moreover, he has made numerous voice-over and commercial appearances throughout his career. Mr. Li has extensive experience as a director, working on a range of musicals such as Children of Eden, Rent, Songs for a New World, Spring Awakening, and more. He has also directed other productions including The Songs for a New World, Love at First Snow, and My City, My Home. In addition to his directing work, he has served as a voice and singing coach for productions such as Woman in Kenzo and Man of La Mancha.

In this course, student-centred learning and teaching activities are designed to engage students in a holistic experience to enrich them as people, drama artists, makers of drama / theatre, and theatre participants through the “Three Key Learning Processes: Performing, Creating and Appreciation”. It provides students with a comprehensive study of drama and theatre production as an art form and introduces them to the professional world of theatre, while developing their creativity, power of imagination, people skills and self-confidence. Students may choose, according to their personal interest, “Dramatic Arts” or “Theatre Production” as their elective parts. This course is conducted in Chinese.     Lifelong Learning Explore dynamic programmes at EXCEL. Advanced Theatre Acting / Advanced Theatre Acting In Advanced Theatrical Acting, through script analysis, theatrical exercises, and cast setting exercise, students will learn how to understand the script, the intention of playwright, and the psychological interactions between casts. Students will also learn how to use various materials to inspire the creative process in theatre. The courses will guide students to develop acting techniques and their inner strengths through acting exercises and the journey of self-discovery. Students will experience the inevitable linkages between drama and reality. They will be encouraged to apply their theatrical experiences and acting techniques to their daily lives, including their individual roles at work or within their social circles. At the end of the course, students will present their scene work and share with the audience about their creative processes. Friends and families are welcome to join this session and share their achievements. The advanced course is suitable for participants who have already completed EXCEL’s intermediate course or with equivalent acting experience. Study Programme / Summer Musical School (SMS) / Sing Out - A Musical 2025 The award-winning dream team of the Hong Kong theatre scene have teamed up with young creatives, sparking new energy in their 2025 production! The Hong Kong original musical "Sing Out - A Musical", which won six major prizes at the 27th Hong Kong Drama Awards, coming to the stage in August 2025. The musical combines the mission of artistic heritage and character education. The 2025 production is organised and produced by HKAPA EXCEL, sponsored by the Lee Hysan Foundation. The professional creative team will collaborate with approximately 70 young people from various institutions to participate in the on-stage and backstage performance, injecting new vigour and creativity into the local musical theatre scene!
