    Frequently Asked Questions FAQ How do I register for a course? You can register for a course on our official website or visit our Reception Counter in person. Can I register for someone else? Yes, you can register on behalf of someone else, provided that the applicant's name and contact details are accurately presented at the time of enrollment. This is necessary so that EXCEL can verify the course participant's identity and contact them in case there are any changes to the class. What payment methods are accepted? For online registration, you will need to settle the payment with credit cards. You may also visit our Reception Counter in Wanchai to settle the payment with cheque and cash. Where will the courses take place? Please refer to the venue information on the course details. You will also receive a course confirmation email listing the venue information. What is the attendance requirement in order to receive a Certificate of Attendance? Not every course offers the Certificate of Attendance, please refer to the course description. In general, students are required to attend at least 80% of the course to receive the Certificate of Attendance. Will there be a makeup class for me if I cannot attend a particular lesson? Please note that no make-up classes will be offered if the student is absent on his/her own accord. When will I know if my enrolment in the course is successful? A confirmation email will be sent to successful applicants at least 3 working days prior to the course commencement. Applicants who have not received email, please email sc.excel@hkapa.edu . Can I withdraw my application after I have paid the course fee? Course fees paid are non-refundable except under very exceptional circumstances such as the course is cancelled before the commencement. Can I change my course after I have registered? Please note that applicants cannot change to another course after paying the course fee. Does EXCEL accept late applications after the course has started? Depending on the availability of places, some courses may consider late enrolment. Please note that applicants enrol after the course start still need to pay the full course fee. It also requires an attendance rate of 80% or higher of the full course length in order to receive the Certificates of Attendance. To secure a place in the course, candidates are encouraged to apply early. What should I do if I want to change my personal information? We use email to notify students of unexpected situations. So please make sure you have provided an up-to-date email address. If there are any updates, please email sc.excel@hkapa.edu as soon as possible. Can I get a course discount? Some courses will offer discount and please check each course description before applying. In general, the following discounts are offered for most of our short courses: 10% offer Senior citizen card holders Holders of registration card for people with disabilities Card holders of Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers Participants who enrol within Early Bird Discount period 20% offer Full-time students (16 or above ) The discount is only applicable to such card holders themselves. The card holders cannot enrol on behalf of other parties with the discount offers. The discount is not applicable to courses which specified "no discounts available".     Terms & Conditions Application / Enrolment Course Cancellation, Transfer & Refund Policy Guideline for Participants Continuing Education Fund (CEF) Course 1.1. Application Important Notes Applications for courses will be accepted up to three days before the commencement of each course unless otherwise specified. It is advisable to register well in advance as places are limited. Applications will be handled on a first-come first-served basis. EXCEL reserves the right to accept or reject any application. 1.2. Enrolment and Payment Methods When enrolling for a course, applicants should provide accurate names (as shown on your HKID card), postal addresses, contact telephone numbers, and email addresses. Applications can be made by a representative, however, the applicant's name and contact details must be accurately presented at the time of enrolment so that EXCEL can verify course participant identity, and contact the participants in the case of any class changes.     Introduction to Risk Assessment for Production Activities Introduction to Risk Assessment for Production activities (Performing Arts) Introduction to Risk Assessment for Production Activities (Performing Arts) Risk assessment is an on-going process that evaluates risks from hazards that may arise along the production process, it is an important component of overall health and safety risk management. This course introduces the idea of risk assessment in the context of performing art productions. Indicative contents: - Concept of health and safety risk management and its process - Definition of hazards and risks - Common hazards and risk - Risk matrix - Risk evaluation - Concept of Hierarchy of control - Risk assessment processes along the production process - Review of cases Date: 29 June 2024 (Sat) Time: 2 pm - 5 pm Venue: HKAPA Language: Cantonese with English Materials Fee: $350 Enrol Speakers Cheung Man-lai Cheung Man-lai is a Lecturer in Technical Direction. He specialises in stage technology, technical direction for productions, venue operations, and workplace health and safety. He holds a BFA in Theatre and Entertainment Arts from the HKAPA, a Prof. Dip. in Occupational Safety and Health from the SCE of HKBU, and an Executive Cert. in Applied Psychology from HKUSPACE. German is continually honing his craft by obtaining professional training at institutions such as the Association of British Theatre Technicians, Artek Formations, and Total Trainings. Collaborating with his colleagues, he translated the ICoPER, the International Code of Practice for Entertainment Rigging, into traditional Chinese to propagate and share best practices. German’s current focus is on automation, applying new technologies, sustainable practices, and cultivating a healthy and safe culture in theatre-making. He is currently a technical member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and a member of the Association of British Theatre Technicians.

    DSE Applied Learning Practical Skills for DSE Success Introduction Applied Learning (ApL) courses are elective subjects within the senior secondary curriculum that emphasises practical learning in professional and vocational fields, combining theory and practice. The HKAPA has been promoting arts education in Hong Kong by offering two performing arts programmes, The Essentials of Theatre Arts and Taking a Chance on Dance , as elective subjects for ApL since 2010. These introductory programmes provide an overview of dance and theatre arts for S.4 to S.6 students who are interested in pursuing performing arts in their future studies and career. Since 2016, both programmes have been registered as Qualifications Framework level 3 Certificate Programmes, and EXCEL has been delegated to operate them since September 2022.     DSE Applied Learning Practical Skills for DSE Success Applied Learning Course The Essentials of Theatre Arts The Essentials of Theatre Arts is one of the Applied Learning (ApL) courses offered to senior secondary students as an elective subject within the senior secondary curriculum. In this course, student-centred learning and teaching activities are designed to engage students in a holistic experience to enrich them as people, drama artists, makers of drama / theatre, and theatre participants through the “Three Key Learning Processes: Performing, Creating and Appreciation”. It provides students with a comprehensive study of drama and theatre production as an art form and introduces them to the professional world of theatre, while developing their creativity, power of imagination, people skills and self-confidence. This course is conducted in Chinese. Selective Module 1: Visual Storytelling Students learn to identify the various disciplines involved in creating content, operate cameras for effective communication through framing and composition, and transfer their ideas into a format suitable for screen work. Additionally, students explore the role of sound and music in storytelling, develop their own stories for shooting, and learn pre-production techniques to ensure a smooth production process. They also learn to produce their stories and apply basic post-production techniques to refine their final product. Selective Module 3: Editing Students learn about the history of editing and the editor's role in storytelling. Additionally, students learn to manage software to set up projects for an edit, master the art of juxtaposition, hone cuts, finalize a cut, and lock picture. They also learn the importance of sound and how to layer effective sound for storytelling. Finally, students learn the basic graphic capacity of their software to output an engaging work.
