DSE Applied Learning Practical Skills for DSE Success Applied Learning Course Taking a Chance on Dance Taking a Chance on Dance is one of the Applied Learning (ApL) courses offered to senior secondary students as an elective subject within the senior secondary curriculum. This course focuses on the aesthetic aspect of dance by engaging students in ta holistic experience as people, dancers and makers of dance through the “Three Key Learning Processes: Performing, Creating and Appreciation”. It involves learning to perform and create dance, learning to appreciate and appraise dance, and using dance to support cognitive learning. The course also provides an all-around training to students, in developing their creativity and imagination, and on the other hand enhancing their interpersonal relations and self-confidence. This course is conducted in Chinese. For more details about the courses, please refer to the link below: [Click Here] Cohort 2026 – 28 Student Selection Arrangement Applicants will be invited to undergo a student selection process to ascertain their eligibility for the programme. The audition schedule will be announced via the Education Bureau platform or applicant’s secondary school. In the meantime, please pay attention to the following selection arrangements and fill in the required information: Selection Procedure Online Questionnaire Applicants are required to submit an online questionnaire form, which includes: Personal Information; Preference(s) on class day and time; A Dance Study Experience Form (if applicable); and A Other Performance Experience Form (if applicable). Face-to-Face Audition Applicants are required to attend a face-to-face audition on either 2 May or 9 May 2026 (Saturday) . With a screening session of selected movie and a corresponding seminar, this course series offers a unique opportunity to delve into the cinematic journey of Ryusuke Hamaguchi. Each week, participants will attend a screening session at MOViEMOViE in the Pacific Place. Following the screening, esteemed film critics from Hong Kong will facilitate a brief sharing session, sharing their valuable insights and analysis for approximately 20 minutes. Born is a Film Historian and his article appeared on Sing Pao, Hong Kong Economic Journal, Hong Kong Economic Times, Film Bi-Weekly, City Magazine, initial Media, Ming Pao Century etc. He has been writing film critique for Ming Pao Sunday for more than 10 years, and taught schools such as HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity and HK Baptist University. He has also been a tutor in School of FTV, Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts since 2010. Born is also a Registered Architect and HKIA Member. He started Architectural Design education in HKDI and worked in the Hong Kong Movie Industry before. His production design team won the Hong Kong Film Award and Taiwan Golden Horse Award.

DSE Applied Learning Practical Skills for DSE Success Introduction Applied Learning (ApL) courses are elective subjects within the senior secondary curriculum that emphasises practical learning in professional and vocational fields, combining theory and practice. The HKAPA has been promoting arts education in Hong Kong by offering two performing arts programmes, The Essentials of Theatre Arts and Taking a Chance on Dance , as elective subjects for ApL since 2010. These introductory programmes provide an overview of dance and theatre arts for S.4 to S.6 students who are interested in pursuing performing arts in their future studies and career. Since 2016, both programmes have been registered as Qualifications Framework level 3 Certificate Programmes, and EXCEL has been delegated to operate them since September 2022. The Hong Kong original musical "Sing Out - A Musical", which won six major prizes at the 27th Hong Kong Drama Awards, will return to the stage in August 2024. Selective Module 1: Visual Storytelling Students learn to identify the various disciplines involved in creating content, operate cameras for effective communication through framing and composition, and transfer their ideas into a format suitable for screen work. Additionally, students explore the role of sound and music in storytelling, develop their own stories for shooting, and learn pre-production techniques to ensure a smooth production process. They also learn to produce their stories and apply basic post-production techniques to refine their final product. Fundamentals of Stage Management / Fundamentals of Stage Management This course is an overview of the roles of stage management in the theatre industry. Course content includes: * Outline of the stage management team's duties and responsibilities including their roles in the technical period * Introducing theatre conventions, stage equipment and theatre glossary * Organizational and management skills * Preparation of prompt book and blocking notation * Understanding the financial responsibilities of the stage management team in relation to production budgets * Introducing the relationship of the stage management team to other theatre personnel * Calling cues * Stage managing various art forms * Theatre health and safety On successful completion of this course, participants should understand some of the fundamental techniques of stage management. The course includes a session for participants to practice at a theatre. A combined practical class will be offered to students from Stage Lighting Design, Stage Management and Sound Technology and Operation course at the last lesson**. **The combined practical class will be offered on the condition that there is sufficient enrolment for EACH course.
