Speaker: SIU Wai Jung Justin
Justin Siu is a jazz double bassist, cellist, jazz orchestra conductor, and composer. He began classical cello training at age nine and swept up numerous music awards in his youth.
After a decade abroad, Siu heeded his musical calling and returned to Hong Kong to pursue jazz full-time. He has since actively participated in and spearheaded creative music projects, collaborating with many renowned local and international jazz artists. His festival highlights include the Macau Jazz Week (2015), Hong Kong International Jazz Festival (2016/2017), Daegu International Jazz Festival in South Korea (2018), and Freespace Jazz Festival (2020–2023).
A decade-long partnership with Grammy-nominated artist Howard McCrary stands among his most celebrated collaborations. As music director, Siu led a 22-piece orchestra on multiple tours across the Greater China region, culminating in two sold-out performances of "Peace and All that Jazz" at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in 2013. In 2018, his debut album SPIN, released on Universal Music, topped the HMV jazz album chart for six weeks within its first two months.
During the pandemic (2020–2022), Siu produced over 160 livestream concerts, launching the Hong Kong Noodle Shop Jazz and Jazz from Ground Up series — blending jazz with local Hong Kong culture — supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. In 2023, he made his debut as producer and playwright with the acclaimed musical Just Listen: The Jazz of Haruki Murakami.
