This course explores code-based music creation using platforms such as Strudel and SuperCollider, which have emerged as tools for contemporary music making. These powerful real-time synthesis engines and programming environments allow electronic musicians, sound designers, and composers to shape sound and structure musical elements within interactive, live contexts. The course covers essential topics including code-based musical notation, algorithmic composition, synthesis techniques, sampling, control logic, and network interactivity with external software and hardware.
Students will learn fundamental programming concepts applicable across various languages while focusing on the specific affordances of live coding. Through practical exercises in text-based environments, students will analyse and practise music coding techniques and explore how to apply these core theories to music making and aesthetics.
