Hong Kong embraces both Chinese and Western cultures, also blending the old and new traditions, provides a unique urban environment that serves as a creative wellspring for filmmakers.
Yau Ma Tei is one of the earliest developed areas on the Kowloon Peninsula. Shanghai Street was once a bustling hub, while the "Yung Shu Tau" area of Temple Street remains a popular entertainment spot for the grassroots community. In the past, the district was home to numerous cinemas, and even today, it boasts one of the few cinemas in the city dedicated to screening niche and art films. Amidst rapid urban development, Yau Ma Tei has preserved many historical landmarks and traditional shops, forming a distinctive community culture rich in local flavour, making it a popular filming location for both local and international productions.
This tour is led by a film culture expert and consists of two parts:
Morning Session: A lecture will delve into the cultural history of Yau Ma Tei and its connection to film and television. Clips from movies filmed in the district will be screened, analysing how filmmakers use the camera to showcase urban spaces.
Afternoon Session: The tour will continue with a field study, exploring the various corners and alleys of Yau Ma Tei. The focus will be on locations featured in classic films and television series shot in the area, accompanied by sharing of interesting community anecdotes and observations. Through the lens of cinema, we will rediscover our city.
