The Tobacco Box Dance, as a representative dance of the Yi ethnic group in southern Yunnan, is a project for the inheritance of dance listed in China’s national intangible cultural heritage. The dance is renowned for its graceful movements, agile and robust techniques, and distinctive style, all showcased through the manipulation of the tobacco box with both hands.
 
The postures and movements of the Yi tobacco box dance originate from social production and regional life, reflecting people's dynamic imitation of nature and the refined movements of their own bodies—this can be considered the essence of folk wisdom. During the grandest festival of the Yi people, the "March 3 Song Festival" in the Honghe region of Yunnan, the dance of the four-stringed instrument (tobacco box dance) is one of the most important activities, serving as a prominent carrier of Yi folk customs and a typical representation of Yi cultural features.
 
This course adopts a combined teaching format, focusing on the body posture and rhythm of the tobacco box dance, typical movements, and stylistic phrases. The content progresses from easy to difficult, covering everything from the techniques of handling the tobacco box to grasping the style and rhythm, as well as the clever coordination of various body parts such as the head, feet, body, hands, and waist, combined with a rich variety of dance steps. Through professional, detailed dynamic explanations and movement analysis, the course will lead you to appreciate the unique four-stringed sentiments and the vibrant spirit of the southwestern ethnic minorities—the Honghe Yi. 
  
*A piano accompanist will be provided during the class to enhance the learning experience.
*Must have at least 3 years of Chinese dance training, 5 years preferred.
*Uniformly purchased props: Cigarette box for $48 per person, please pay during the first class.
*Please prepare your own practice attire that highlights upper body lines or tight-fitting T-shirts, straight-leg pants, and flat black cloth shoes for folk dance.
