The ABRSM Grade 6-8 Music Theory course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the essential concepts and skills necessary for success in the Grade 8 Music Theory examination. Throughout this course, students will explore various topics and develop their knowledge and abilities in music theory.  
Course Objectives:  
1. Figured Bass Understanding: Students will delve into the intricacies of figured bass notation, analyzing its use in Baroque music and understanding its role in harmonization.  
2. Completion of a Short Passage Written for the Piano: Students will practice their ability to complete a short musical passage, written specifically for the piano, by filling in missing elements such as chords, melodies, and harmonies.  
3. Composition of a 12-Bar Melody: Students will learn the techniques and principles behind composing a well-structured 12-bar melody, exploring concepts such as phrase structure, tonality, and thematic development.  
4. Score Reading: Students will develop their score-reading skills by studying and interpreting piano music, chamber music, and orchestral scores.  
By the end of the ABRSM Grade 6-8 Music Theory course, students will have acquired a solid foundation in music theory concepts and practical applications. They will be prepared to demonstrate their knowledge and proficiency in the Grade 8 Music Theory examination, as well as apply their skills in various musical contexts and endeavors.

  • Tutor's Profile

    Tutor: Fung Kwok Tung

    Kwok-tung Fung graduated from the Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong with first-class honors, and was later fully funded by the Sir Youde Memorial Fund Overseas Fellowship to study at the Graduate School of the University of Wisconsin in Madison. After returning to Hong Kong, he actively participated in performances. He has performed and acted as an adjudicator in more than 20 cities at home and abroad, and has travelled all over Europe, America and Asia. In addition to performances, he often participates in recording work, and publishes scores and books, some of which are included in the "Hong Kong Music Collection". Fung is currently a part-time instructor at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and has opened a performing arts agency.
